Key Differences Between the Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne

The Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne are among the very best luxury and most coveted SUVs on the planet, with both racking up a long list of notable awards in the automotive industry. The Cayenne has won AutoWeek’s 14th Annual America’s Best award, Robb Report’s Best of the Best award, Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value, Car and Driver Editor’s Choice, 10 Best Luxury SUVs, AutoPacific’s Best in Class Premium Luxury Crossover SUV and Edmunds Top Rated. That list still doesn’t begin to scratch the surface.

In the same fashion, the Porsche Macan has won many of the same exact awards in alternating years, in addition to others. Car and Driver featured the Macan in their list of 10 Best Trucks and SUVs, and it has also achieved the top spot for J.D. Power’s Highest Ranked Appeal and Highest Initial Quality.

Both the Macan and the Cayenne are serious head-turners, both offer passengers a level of luxury driving that most of us only dream about, both provide sports-car-like performance and power, both have zoomed right past luxury SUV rankings, and both are far ahead of comparable performance SUV models from Porsche’s competitors.

So how do you begin choosing between the two?

Ultimately, the decision is simply a matter of personal preference and travel needs. However, we have reassuring news for those finding themselves frustrated in deciding between the two:

You can’t go wrong with either choice.

Size

The Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne both comfortably seat five total passengers. One of the first things you’ll probably notice after taking in the gorgeous cabin of either vehicle is how notably roomy the front rows are. However, the Cayenne provides rear-seat passengers with more legroom and space above their heads. While the Macan’s rear seat certainly isn’t cramped, taller passengers may begin to feel uncomfortable if they’re seated for more than a few hours.

The Cayenne is longer than the Macan, boasting an impressive cargo space of over 27 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Once the rear seats are folded down, that number jumps up to a massive 60.3. In comparison, the Macan offers a more modest 17.6 cubic feet, but raises to 52.9 with the rear seats folded down.

Those who require enhanced storage space to haul large items or luggage, have large passengers in the backseat more often than not, or plan to regularly use their vehicle for family vacations may want to consider the Cayenne. But don’t let the size scare you, the Cayenne still manages to be incredibly powerful, fuel-efficient and nimble.

On the other hand, drivers more interested in a luxury crossover SUV for practical, everyday driving may want to opt for the Macan. Although smaller, it offers excellent handling and performance, enough pep to make you look forward to running errands around town, and the luxury-feel of a sedan. Not to mention, the Macan costs, on average, about $16,000 less than the Cayenne.

Features & Technology

Coming in at a higher starting price point, the Porsche Cayenne does include a longer list of included features in comparison to the Macan. Fortunately though, Macan owners certainly won’t be missing out on quality, as it still offers the level of luxury amenities expected in a luxury brand SUV.

The Cayenne’s touch screen is a bit larger than the Macan: 12.3 inches vs. 10.9. But both screens have simple, beautiful designs, are easy to understand and use, and display crisp, sharp graphics.

Additionally, both models feature Porsche Communication Management, an AI system that controls navigation, voice command, and infotainment. The Macan and Cayenne include Bluetooth capabilities, a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot, enough USB ports for the entire family, satellite radio, etc. The list of standard and optional features offered in any newer Porsche is always a long one: Panoramic sunroof, quad-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay, 14-speaker Bose stereo system, 21-speaker Burmester stereo system, rear-seat entertainment system, on and on. Whether you decide on a base model Macan or a completely decked-out Cayenne, you won’t be lacking in luxury tech features.

Performance and Specifications

Power and gas mileage differ between model tiers of the Cayenne and Macan. The Porsche Macan’s base trim level achieves 252 horsepower with 273 lb-ft of torque thanks to its turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder inline engine, keeping in sync with the high level of performance synonymous with the Porsche name. The base trim Cayenne excels just a bit further with 300 horsepower, and offers 259 lb-ft of torque with a 3.6L VS engine. Whereas most SUVs suffer in agility due to their larger size, Porsche has managed to preserve the personality of a sports car inside both the Macan and Cayenne.

You’ll be able to enjoy 18” wheels and Porsche Traction Management Active All-Wheel Drive on either model, as well as a number of differing strengths. If having maximum possible power is your main concern, the Cayenne may be the Porsche SUV for you. If you value efficiency a bit more than power, perhaps look towards the Macan’s lighter weight and nimbleness. Truth be told, either one will provide you with plenty of power for daily driving, rapid acceleration, precise steering and an exhilarating ride.

Interior

The verdict on Porsche’s varying SUV interiors is an easy tie. Both the Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne honor the luxury market with gorgeous cabin designs, high-quality materials and sleek lines and inlays. Passengers of either vehicle can look forward to elegant leather upholstery and eight-way power-adjustable seats, with a long list of available upgrades including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats (your passengers will thank you), fourteen-way power-adjustable seats or eighteen-way power-adjustable sport seats. Inside even the most basic trims, you’ll be greeted with highly supportive, comfortable seating as well as an aesthetic that screams luxury travel. All in all, and no matter which decision you make, you’ll find yourself in a vehicle that’s dripping with refinement.

Safety

The Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Macan tie again for safety. Each already come equipped with plenty of standard safety and driver assistance features, including fan favorites like the  rearview cameras and front-and-rear parking sensors. As an added bonus, many Macan models come standard with lane-departure warning.

Optional safety and assistance features for Porsche’s lineup of SUVs stand as evidence for how far the luxury automotive industry has come. Owners can tack on adaptive cruise control, surround-view camera, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, night-vision assist, and more.
